Here’s a difficult question for you: would you rather chuck on your joggers and head out to exercise, or stay in bed with your BF and have passionate sex? It’s a no brainer, right? And you’re probably wondering why we’d even ask such an obvious question, but we promise there’s a method to our madness.
Canadian researchers have discovered that having sex burns more calories than a walk. Yep, it basically means that you never have to feel guilty again if you spend a day between the sheets with your BF – you were actually just working on your fitness!
The study by the University of Quebec at Montreal found that for young people, a sex session burns an average of 4.2 calories per minute for guys and 3.1 calories per minute for ladies. The average couple has sex for 24.7 minutes which means that aside from feeling amazing, having sex can burn women 69 calories and men 104 calories.
If you’re not that clued up on calories, those amounts are the same as going for a walk. Exercise = done! While it might not be as good for us as a run, we’re happy to take it! And it’s not just the amount of calories burnt during sex that is helping your health.
“Aside from emotional benefits, sex has a lot of health benefits. It releases feel good hormones and endorphins, lowers stress levels and boosts our immune system,” explains sex and relationship expert Isiah McKimmie.
So how can you up the calorie burn factor of your next sex session? Isiah recommends switching up your positions. “Changing positions will help to move different body parts. Getting things hot, then slowing down for a bit will be a good cardio workout,” she explains.
“Squatting positions (like cowgirl) are great for toning and positions where you're either bending over or have your legs up near your head are good for stretching muscles.”
So next time you skip the gym in favour of sex with your guy, don’t you dare feel guilty.
